The Annunciation

Gabriel the archangel comes to Mary as the Messenger of God to announce that she is to be the Virgin prophesied in Isaiah 7:14. Over the centuries there are many elements in all the depiction of the annunciation that are symbolic. Here, the scene is placed in New Mexico. The post that divides the angel from Mary represents their different worlds of heaven and earth. Mary holds the book with the prophecy in it. Gabriel offers her lilies, representing her purity. Mary is depicted with full recognition of the weight of Gabriel's message and what she will face because of it. The room behind her is God's bedchamber. The pot represents the pending pregnancy. There are countless depictions of this scene that are very moving and beautiful made throughout the centuries. I hope you enjoy mine.

Isaiah 7:14:
"And the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold a Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."
