She was born in New York, daughter to a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin mother, in 1656. When she was four, smallpox took her parents and brother and left her with pox marks and bad eyesight. She was adopted by two aunts and an uncle who was chief of the Turtle Clan. She was baptized by the age of 20; after which she was persecuted by her clan and village. She moved to a Native American Christian community in Quebec, Canada. There she led a life of prayer while caring for the sick and the elderly. She took vows of chastity in 1679. She died a year later. It is said that upon her death the pox marks cleared from her face.

"Holy St. Kateri, "Lily of the Mohawks," pray for us.
May we learn to walk in harmony with the natural world.
There may we find comfort and joy until we find our way to the Great Spirits."
