Matthew (Mateo) was a Jewish tax collector for the Romans. He was hated by his own people because of this. Christ, however, asked Matthew if he could dine with him. Jesus's disciples were horrified that he would dine with a man of such ill repute. Jesus said, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" Matthew, was so deeply and spiritually moved by his dinner with Christ that he became a disciple. He wrote the Gospel according to Matthew.
